 OHS Consultation Course
About this Course
This course aims to familiarise participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to apply the principles of workplace OHS consultation as an integral part of an effective OHS Management System (OHSMS), as well as how to carry out their functions under OHS legislation.
Who Should Attend?
The NSW OHS Regulation states that all OHS committee members and all OHS representatives must attend this course.
Course Objectives
On completion of this course participants will be able to:
  • Explain the requirements for effective management of OHS and the importance of consultation
  • Detail the requirements for consultation under OHS Act 2000
  • Describe the mechanisms for consultation including workplace committees and OHS representatives
  • Outline effective communication techniques
  • Detail the requirements for effective OHS management systems
  • Conduct risk management and consultation through work-based activity
  • Highlight the need for continuous improvement in OHS through consultation
  • Course Content
  • Discuss the barriers to effective health and safety management
  • Describe the needs, responsibilities of various parties in the workplace
  • Describe the relationship between legislation and guidance material
  • Outline the employer’s duties under the OHS legislation
  • Outline the OHS obligations of individuals and others
  • Describe when, how, where and why consultation should be conducted
  • Specify the role and functions of OHS committees and OHS representatives
  • Describe the elements of effective and meaningful communication
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and problem solving techniques
  • Discuss the importance of a systematic approach to OHS management
  • Explain the OHS risk management process
  • Conduct hazard identification and risk assessment activities
  • Outline control measures of ensuring continuous improvement in OHS
  • Detail the requirements for investigation of workplace incidents/accidents
  • Outline the role of workplace inspections
Assessment
Assessment is informal and is through observation of participant contribution to discussion, short answer discussions and successful completion of training exercises and activities.
Qualification
Successful participants are issued with a certificate in OHS Consultation.
