About this Course
This course aims to familiarise participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to apply the provisions of the NSW Occupational Health and Safety (Hazardous Substances) Regulation 2001.

Supervisors, managers and OHS Committee/OHS Representatives.
Course Objectives
On completion of this course participants will be able to:
- Describe the legislation relating to hazardous substances in NSW
- Describe the health and safety effects relating to the use of hazardous substances
- Participate in hazard identification, risk assessment and control
- Identify hazards relating to hazardous substances and associated tasks in the workplace
- Assess the risks relating to the use of hazardous substances in the workplace
- Control the risks relating to hazardous substances
- Communicate and consult regarding implementation of hazardous substances management plans
- Design a m management program for hazardous substances
- Implement an appropriate monitoring and health surveillance program for hazardous substances
Course Content
- Explain the inter-relationship of the OHS Act 2000, regulations, codes of practice and standards
- List the major components of the Hazardous Substances Regulatory reform package
- Interpret some of the specialised terms and acronyms used
- Describe what is meant by a hazardous substance
- Identify the main routes of exposure
- Interpret material safety data sheets and labels
- Conduct a risk assessment
- Distinguish between biological and environmental monitoring
- Recognise the need for appropriate control measures
- Define the term consultation
- List all workplace substances
- Establish a hazardous substances register
- Design and implement a management program
- Develop procedures for recording actions
- Participate in workplace discussions on the implementation of the program
- Determine which record have to be kept and the length of time.
Assessment/Qualification
Assessment is informal and is through observation of participant contribution. Successful participants are issued with a certificate of attendance.
